Project Challenges
GoWi was developed to address the real-world complexities of carpooling at a national level in Ireland. The project required balancing multiple user roles within a single app, supporting both urban and intercity travel patterns, and ensuring accurate route matching without inconveniencing drivers. At the same time, building trust and safety among users, maintaining affordability, and keeping the experience simple across daily commutes and event-based travel presented key challenges that shaped the platform’s design and functionality.
Needed a single app where Irish commuters, students, and event-goers could both offer and request rides without confusing navigation or separate “driver” and “passenger” experiences.
The product had to work across Ireland (Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and beyond), handling very different demand patterns between dense urban commutes and longer intercity trips.
Matching people “going the same way” required real-time route matching rather than simple city-to-city matching, plus sensible pickup points that don’t ask drivers for big detours.
To get adoption beyond friends and colleagues, GoWi needed verified profiles, ratings, and live tracking that make sharing a car with strangers feel safe and controlled.
The platform had to keep carpools clearly cheaper than solo driving or public transport alternatives, while still allowing drivers to fairly offset fuel and toll costs.
Different use cases-daily office runs, student commutes, festival trips-meant the app needed to stay simple while still supporting one-off rides, recurring trips, and ad-hoc event carpools.
